Skincare as self care has obviously been one of the unifying themes of my whole accidental skincare blogging and content creation and book writing journey. But although I’ve talked a ton about the mental benefits of establishing and sticking to a skincare routine, I haven’t talked as much about the external rewards of a successful skincare routine.

Acne, eczema, psoriasis, and other visible skin conditions can wreak havoc on our self esteem and our ability to navigate the world with confidence. Our face is generally the first thing people see when they meet us and therefore makes the very first impression that we give to others. Our skin is the largest part of our face. Therefore, feeling self-conscious about our skin can impact what we’re able to accomplish and how much we’re able to enjoy our lives professionally, academically, socially, and romantically. We may turn down invitations, shy away from opportunities, or just shrink into ourselves, wanting to hide from judgment.

In a perfect world, we wouldn’t have to feel that way. We wouldn’t have to fear judgment from others about the state of our skin. And I do believe that for most of us, our fears are overblown. Very few people ever judge others as harshly as they judge themselves, and hardly anyone notices those “blemishes” that loom large in our reflections in the mirror. But we don’t live in a perfect world. Life is short, and I believe it’s more productive and more life-changing to do what we can to clear up the issues that hold us back from seizing our full potential. The scope of our lives broadens exponentially when we feel comfortable enough in our own skin to face the world.

I’m excited to talk about both clearing up skin issues and self-esteem challenges tomorrow as one of the guest speakers at the I Am Lucent Radiant Skin Telesummit. Join me for a conversation with organizer Nadia Hinds at 12:30pm PST/3:30 EST to learn how you can break out of skin issues and reclaim your joy!
