The Met Gala is a night to be surprised and delighted by the fashion and beauty looks celebrities bring to The Metropolitan Museum of Art stairs, but we’re not the least bit surprised that model and activist Quannah Chasinghorse brought one of the most inspired and inspiring ensembles to one of the biggest fashion nights of the year.

Chasinghorse’s look is a stunning nod to traditional indigenous adornments—she’s a member of the Hän Gwich’in and Oglala Lakota tribes—with contemporary elements. One of the standout aspects: her gorgeous hair.

Amika’s global artistic director Naeemah LaFond created the long, partially braided look. “Quannah wanted her hair to be modern that was true to her personal style, as well as her culture, so her look features a sleek style with some intricate braiding,” LaFond said in a statement. “I chose a figure-eight braid because I knew it would make a statement, yet still allow the dress and the jewelry to be center stage.”

LaFond parted Chasinghorse’s hair slightly off-center and added a few drops of Amika Glass Action Universal Elixir to the hair. She then created the figure-eight braid on the side of her head and added a small cornrow right under it. After clipping in extensions for volume, she sprayed the hair with Headstrong Intense Hold Hairspray, followed by the Shield Anti-Humidity Spray. The Wizard Detangling Primer got the rest of her hair extra sleek, and LaFond finished the style with the Wizard Detangling Primer for more shine. Two feathers are worked into the braid.

The aforementioned incredible jewelry was designed for Quannah Chasinghorse by beadwork artist and indigenous activist Lenise Omeasoo, and the Allure A-Lister’s turquoise tulle gown is by Prabal Gurung. The color is echoed in Chasinghorse’s makeup—specifically her eye shadow.

No one else at the Met Gala brought what Chasinghorse brought to the festivities, making it all the more beautiful.
