Have you ever wondered what outer space smells like?

If you assumed it smells like nothing up there — as I did for 26 years — you’re wrong. Astronauts have compared the smell of space to “seared steak, raspberries, and rum.” And thanks to a Kickstarter campaign, you might soon be able to experience the mysterious smell yourself.

The Kickstarter, which has raised nearly $250,000 so far, seeks to bottle the scent as a fragrance called “Eau de Space,” and make it available to the average, curious, space-loving person.

In the video below, which appears on the Kickstarter page, you can see astronauts discussing the unique smell of space in greater detail. And in 2008, NASA enlisted the help of Steve Pearce, a chemist and the founder of Omega Ingredients, to re-create it.

There’s a new perfume that smells like outer space

Fun fact: Space has a specific smell and now there’s a perfume that will allow your senses to get a whiff of it.

Eau de Space is the new fragrance that has garnered a lot of attention after being posted on Kickstarter as a crowdfunding campaign.

The scent was originally created by chemist Steve Pearce who was contracted by NASA in 2008 to develop a scent that mimicked the smell of outer space.

This scent was initially made to help train astronauts and eliminate any surprises they may experience while launching into orbit.

Several astronauts have described the smell as being similar to seared steak, raspberries and metal.

People have pledged over $300,000 for a NASA-made perfume that smells like outer space

People have pledged over $300,000 to bring a NASA-developed fragrance that smells like outer space to the masses on Earth. 

The scent was developed over a decade ago but was only used by NASA during astronaut field training, according to the product’s Kickstarter page. Now, “through sheer determination, grit, a lot of luck and a couple of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, we got it out,” the website said.

The Kickstarter campaign aims to raise enough money to manufacture the scent as a perfume called “Eau de Space.” As of Sunday, $307,674 has been raised. 

“We’re ready to manufacturer the smell and all we need is (to) meet our minimum order quantity and then we can bottle and ship it,” the website said.
