On the educational front, there is no time like the present to read (or re-read) the renowned 4th of July speech by statesman/orator/abolitionist Frederick Douglass. If you’re a lot more of a listener than a reader, you’re in luck, simply because you can hear James Earl Jones read it.

Each time I re-read through this speech myself, 1 aspect of it usually hits me in a different way than the very last time, based on recent situations. Currently it is this passage:

There are seventy-two crimes in the Condition of Virginia, which, if fully commited by a black guy, (no make a difference how ignorant he be), subject him to the punishment of dying though only two of the identical crimes will subject matter a white gentleman to the like punishment.

How small has altered, and how tricky we will have to battle! But really do not despair. As Coretta Scott King mentioned, “Freedom is under no circumstances truly received. You generate it and acquire it in just about every era.” Let’s acquire.
